Twos prove #1 spot no accident in TAC Round

27-Jul-2024

As feared, the Roy Girls’ trek out west for the second week running was marked by dour wet weather with a blustering breeze raging across Lofts Reserve. Not exactly welcoming, especially with the prospect of facing a tough game against an improving Williamstown.

But the Roys Ressie’s were at their clinical best, with the midfield led by Aspen Wagner and Elyse Campbell dominating the contests and best-on-ground performances provided by Aspen, Mia Sutherland, Gif Hassan, Lily Prowse-McKeon and Alice Lietz.

“Williamstown’s effort and pace was impressive but our defensive structure worked well to halt their attack,” coach Mick McFarlane says.

The win not only reinforced the Roy Ressies’ self-belief for the players, but for their coaches who saw an effective translation from the training track to game day in the Roy 2s’ marking ability and spread moving forward.

“Next week’s game against second placed St. Bede’s will be another challenge,” says Mick, “one we’re really looking forward to in the lead up to finals.”

For the Seniors, the going was even tougher and although Cam McKinley was unequivocal in his praise of the Senior Roys’ endeavour and effort in the undeniably tough conditions.

“I thought the players played extremely well in tough conditions. The girls never gave up and fought hard till the very end. The girls should be extremely proud of their efforts.”

For Cam, who stepped into the breach as Senior Coach for the day, one play that really stood out was Gemma Murphy deciding to leave her opponent in the back half to attack the footy, winning it back for us.

“If she hadn’t, it would have ended in a certain goal for the opposition.”

Cam gave special mention to Liv Brilliant and Jaime Nelson. “Liv was amazing in embracing a tough task on a very good player, and not only held her scoreless but almost without a possession the whole game. And Jaime fought hard in the ruck all day giving our midfield first use of the footy and her second efforts around the ground were incredible.”

Back on the road again next week, this time back south to face St Bede’s at Mentone Oval.
