Back at Brunswick Street, the Roys hosted our annual Women’s Pride Game. This year against Williamstown CYMS.

Ressie’s coach Mick McFarlane deemed it a tight contest, the Twos not putting the game away early despite their overall domination in the midfield.

Why? To answer that you only have to think of the old ‘bad kicking/bad football’ adage. Mick put it in more plainly, putting it down to “inaccuracy in front of goal.” 

Given our healthy numbers (some might categorise it as problematic), the coaches experimented a number of newer and less experienced players in new positions. Again, with success, with the Ressies' points adding up nicely, and seeing them triumphant at the end, 27 to 1 solitary point.

Chloe Sheats and Marin McLaughlan were fantastic through the midfield and half forward, with Aspen Wagner joining them to head the list of best on ground performances, and Chloe Sheats, Edie Bridgewater and Gifar Hassan earning high praise from the coach.

For the Seniors, it was a great defensive effort, but harking back to last season’s song sheet, the Roys couldn’t hit the scoreboard enough to make a difference.

“But keeping the highest scoring team to two goals for the game was amazing,” says Senior Coach Nathan Jameau, “and a credit to our team defence.

“Again the scoreboard didn't flatter our effort throughout the game.

“We saw great individual efforts from Lauren ‘Jacky Fowler’ Atkinson down back, as well as Robyn Randell in the middle and Mia Sutherland up forward.

“All in all, many moments we’ll learn from as we proceed through the season, and something we’re excited into action.

Next week it’s off west to test our resolve in achieving back-to-back wins against Westbourne Grammar.
