The Fitzroy-ACU Womens 1 team has won its way into the VWFL Division 3 grand final on Saturday night where they will face the strong and undefeated Gippsland Galaxy team at Shepley Oval in Dandenong.

The Roy Girls form appears to be peaking at exactly the right time with another cracking finalsperformance to put Ajax away on Sunday at the Bill Lawry Oval in Northcote 4.10.34 to 1.1.7.

With a strong breeze in the first quarter, Fitzroy-ACU had nearly all the play in their half but failed to capitalise fully, missing several shots at goal, but still leading 1.5.11 to a solitary point at quarter time.

It was the defensive efforts against the wind right across the ground, which really won the day, keeping Ajax scoreless in the second quarter and leading 2.5.17 to 0.1.1 at half time.

The game was at times fiery and willing, but the Roy Girls were well and truly up for the fight. Ajax came out after the break, scored an early goal and really stepped up the pressure.

But you could see the confidence growing as players tackled hard, found space and then the break on the scoreboard came. Ash Riddell, who played a terrific game, landed a long shot at goal, followed soon after by Liz Olney who bounced the ball down the wing and ran in to kick her third goal of the day and the sealer.

In a very strong team performance, the best players were Olney, Riddell, Janie Gibson, Tash Ross-Harris, Alex Monacella and Lauren Atkinson.

The grand final will be played at 7.30 on Saturday night. The womens team has had some good wins under lights this year in the Hipster Cup and other Friday night games played at Vic Park.

But as coach John Marshall knows, the six-day break to recover isnt great preparation against a team which hasnt lost since early in the 2015 season.

The club is excited to have made it to our first womens competition Grand Final. We will be playing against the Division 3 benchmark team, Gippsland, who will have had two weeks to prepare for the game./p>

But he praised the Roy Girls for making the grand final in just the second year in the VWFL competition, He also praised the womens 2 team saying it was a whole of team effort to make the Grand Final.

The development of players was evident across the season and under Jo Hogan our North West team just missed out on playing finals too under. A benefit of having two teams was that the coaches were able to challenge players by playing them in the higher division where they were able to continue to develop their skills and abilities. In July we were dealt a blow when our two dominant rucks, Chrissie Atkinson and Tegan Sword were injured, but it has provided an opportunity for other players to step up./p>

Ten of the players who have played in the finals for Fitzroy are playing in their first season.

Please note that for the grand final the entry fee is $10 for adults, no concession, and children under 14 free. Also no dogs or alcohol are allowed to be brought into the ground.
