It was an excellent return from injury for Fitzroy Vice Captain, Dom Pound Palmieri on Saturday. Not only did the team get back onto the winnerslist
in Premier B, but Dom also played his 100th senior game for the club.
Fitzroy travelled to a muddy Princes Park Caufield for a meeting with Old Haileybury and made up for the round two loss with a four goal win, 13.11.89 to 10.5.65.
It was a good day all round with the Reserves hanging on to win by one point in the earlier game.
Co-captain Rory Angiolella set the tone early and didnt let up all day, going in for repeated tackles and clearances out of the mud bog in the middle of the ground. He required multiple jumper changes throughout the afternoon and was acknowledged by the coaches for his efforts.
His fellow captain, Dan Bisetto, kicked the first goal and competed strongly around the ground in ruck and marking contests, despite being double-teamed on many occasions.
It was an excellent first half display from Fitzroy, with Luke Baker going forward and kicking four goals. Jack Dalton also chimed in with three. Sam Baker, Peter Baccanello and Tom Biscaro all played strong games.
But as they did in round 2 at Brunswick Street, Old Haileybury displayed a lot of fight and superior fitness in the second half, finishing the stronger and giving Fitzroy a fright before the steadied and locked down their fifth win, joining a log jam in the middle of the ladder, where they now sit in 6th position.
In the lead up to the game, team mate Tom Cheshire spoke about Doms contribution to the team. Whether it's on the field or in the change room, Dom's positive attitude on and off the track is something all the boys love and appreciate.
He'll forever make us laugh yet keep it serious when need be; a real skill he has developed since becoming a leader at the club. I really feel he has thrived since becoming a vice captain - having watched Dom fly through the ranks since Under 19s, I've really noticed his leadership qualities grow as he cements himself as a future leader for many years to come.
Tom says Dom is one of the fittest players at the club and its his gut running and selflessness that are his strongest on-field attributes, always putting the team first.
