Please join us for Anzac Day at Brunswick Street Oval. Before our Senior Men take on Williamstown CYMS, our special guest speaker, historian and author Xavier Fowler, will discuss 'Football, War and Remembrance.'
Xavier completed his PhD in 2018, studying the relationship between sport and the First World War. In 2021 he published his first book with Melbourne University Press, titled Not Playing the Game: Sport and Australia's Great War. He is now beginning work on his second book, examining the rivalry between the Victorian Football League and Victorian Football Association. Xavier grew up in Geelong and played local football with St Joseph's in the Geelong Football League and West Brunswick in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
After lunch, bugler Ash Ballat will lead us into our minutes silence before the game, and during our traditional half-time wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial in Edinburgh Gardens we'll remember the Fitzroy players and other community members lost in wars.
Please join us on Monday, 25 April for our special Anzac Day Lunch.
